A thriving ecosystem
Chemical and material companies can be found throughout the whole province of Limburg, but a true hotspot of the chemical industry lies in Sittard-Geleen with the Chemelot Campus and Industrial Park. Here, most of the 250 companies active in the chemical sector are located. They have all chosen Limburg as their location because of the excellent facilities of the campus and park, as well as the abundance of talent in the region and the ideal location of Limburg relative to the European market. The total industrial added value of the sector was around EUR 2.4 billion in 2020, with again a major share coming from the cluster in Sittard-Geleen.
Brightlands Chemelot Campus
The Brightlands Chemelot Campus is part of the Brightlands concept, an open innovation community in Limburg that brings together innovative entrepreneurs, researchers, and students in a specific sector. In Sittard-Geleen they are especially focused on tomorrow’s materials with tenants of the Campus given access to talent, knowledge, infrastructure, and entrepreneurship. This enables a vibrant community where students, companies, entrepreneurs, and researchers work on the performance materials, sustainable processes, and biomedical solutions of tomorrow for a more sustainable world.
Chemelot Industrial Park
Adjacent to the Brightlands Chemelot Campus is the Chemelot Industrial Park, where the campus provides opportunities for pilot plants and testing. The industrial park is home to more than 60 full-scale plants and 150 organizations. It has its own rail terminal, a barge terminal close by and seven airports within an hour’s reach. The other unique proposition is that the park operates under a single site permit allowing all heavy chemical processes without any need to apply for permits yourself.
Fit for the chemical future
One of the main focus areas of the chemical sector in Limburg is the sustainable processes. This is in accordance with LIOF’s own ambitions to make Limburg the most sustainable province of Limburg. To this end, Brightlands Chemelot Campus and the Chemelot Industrial Park have committed themselves to the promise to be carbon neutral by 2050. This will require enormous innovation and change, but that is a challenge we would both like to take up, together with you!
